How to take your drawings, to the next level.

Today I want to share some very concrete experiments with you. A way for you to come into that place of flow, and having some guidelines so it feels safer to let go of control.

The first experiment is a very good way to start, you can use it if you feel a little doubtful, a little tired or not really inspired. When you do this experiment, it will make you forget time and space as you go deeper and deeper into the moment.

Lisen’t to this video, where I share my process, or read the blog post.

1) Take 5 pieces of paper, and a timer. Use all the drawing materials you like, I’am very fond of molotov markers, and then I spice it up with pencil, coal, ball pen, and whatever suits me.

2) For the first piece of paper you set the timer to 2 minutes. When the time is out, you take the next paper and set the timer to 4 minutes, and then you continue expanding with 2 minutes for each new paper, till you reach 10 minutes for the last paper.

It’s very interesting how it will free you, when you have the limited timeframe, and the fact that you shift the paper and have to start all over each time, makes your approach more fresh. It allows you to stay open, and to dare to try out new ideas, not thinking so much of the outcome.

As I said before it will take you into the present moment. It will take you out of your mind, out of doubt, self sabortage the urge to have it all planned. You will be abel to feel, maybe just for some moments this relaxed state of joy, excitement and flow. If you feel the urge, you can go on expanding with 2 minutes, as many times you wish, or you can make your own experiments if it works better for you. Maybe you want to do it quicker, so you can expand with only one minute. You could also begin with pencil, and then take a second round on the same papers, then using markers, or paint. Don’t take the experiments as another rule, just take what resonates, and play around with making your own experiments. Your own rules.

But it’s not only a great way to get into the flow, you also end up with 5 pieces of work. Some of them you might want to keep as they are, the others you can use in new works, taking them to the next level.

coverbillede begivenhed.jpg

Be open for the things that comes to you unexpected. The things you didn’t plan. Very often it is in that we wasn’t looking for, that was what we needed.

Use the drawing that failed. Use the outcasts of the paper cuts. Use the other side of the paper. Don’t care about how it will look like. Falling on purpose. Make yourself fail. Do something that you haven’t tried before.

Don’t hang on to the good results, don’t hang on to the bad. Let it all go in every moment. Maybe it is difficult for you to really fail, because you are too good at covering it up. Let it really fail. You can’t still make it fail? Wow, then you don’t have to be so afraid. That’s the whole thing. You have to experience that you can’t fail.

Everything is perfect. When we go beyond our bonderies it’s where magic are, where we think we will fail, we will succeed.

I will explain how I used the form of my original drawing as a skabelon, not for you to do exactly the same, but to show you some tools you can use in your own process. Also it gives you an idea how to look for new ways to approach your work.

1) I started by cutting one of my quick drawings out from the first exercise. Placing it on a bigger seized paper. I wanted an equal seized form to oppose it, so I made an outline of the drawing on another paper.

IMG_20190510_101456.jpg

2) I looked for some materials, and found an old canvas with a wonderfull sky blue paint on it. I just thought it would be so good togheter with my drawing. I used the negative paper form as a skabelon, and cut the form in the sky blue canvas. I also tried to use the backside of the canvas, but it looked too pale to me. I really like to use different materials in my drawings, it gives another rawness to the work.

IMG_20190510_102150 1.jpg
IMG_20190510_102137.jpg

In my work I like to work with contrasts and dualities, and them bind them togheter in a kind of symetry. I have the urge to create balance between the different aspects of myself. To get the differences to “speak” to each other, to get an inner dialog and acceptance between the different aspects. To focus on the form instead of the lines, is a very simpel hack. The two ways of working complements each other, as much as they opposes each other.

Hope you could use these tips. Have a lovely day.

Be bold, let your light out.

In my previous post, I talked about not being afraid of your darker sides. But sometimes our darkest side, can actually be our gifts and talents and uniqueness that we are afraid to show to the world. I have experienced that I often have to dim myself down a little bit, that I can be afraid to be too much, to be too shining. I’am actually trying to be more aware of that aspect. Maybe you can also connect to that feeling?, and the fact that it also complies to your art. Because your artistic creations are a mirror of yourself.

Lisen’t to this video, while following my process, or just read the blog post.

Why is it that it can be so provoking to let that light out?? I think many of us have learned to be humble, to not think so much of ourselves, not to brage about ourselves. Are we afraid that other people will get envious of us?? Or that if we shine too much that other people will actually see us, and then we will be a target of criticism. It’s more comfortable to hide in the shadows. The thing is, the more you allow yourself to be you, the more distinct you will be, the more unique. You will be more clear in your attitude. Of course some people will not like you, but thats okay. A lot of people will love you too. So to let that light out, you have to take the risk of other people not liking you.

You have to like yourself so much, to fill yourself up with love and acceptance so that you don’t need other peoples acceptance. Because you fully accept yourself, you don’t need outer validation.

Create self love. How to do that?? As I explained in my previous blog post you have to embrace all parts of yourself. Also the dark parts. Be kind to yourself. Be aware of all your feelings, dreams and fears. It’s very important, because how can you be bold and shinning if you don’t love yourself? If you don’t accept and honor your own self expression?

Step 1; Embracing

Embrace your shadow. Embrace all your faults. Embrace your feelings. Embrace every aspect of who you are. At the same time, embrace all your art work, also older work, also the work that failed. Appreciate it all as a kind of celebrating yourself in your progress. Celebrating yourself in every step of your journey to fully accepting and expressing yourself as you are. Every step is good enough. Where you are right now is good enough.

Step 2; Asking

What would you like to do, if you could do whatever you liked. What are your boldest dream. What would you create if you had the time and the money?? Think as bold as you can. What makes your heart sing?? Then just take one step in that direction. What can you do today?? What can you do right now.

Very often we say, yes I know what I want, but I just can’t do it now. I can do this when I get my part time job, or when my kids are moved from home. Or when I go on pension.

But in reality I think it’s because we don’t really dare to take the risk. It’s safer to do whats known, what you always did. When we create things it’s the precise same mechanism. If we don’t dare to take risks, and try new things, to get ourselves out there to show up with our works, we will stay limited. We will stay in fear

Marie J.Engelsvold. My creative process.

Marie J.Engelsvold. My creative process.

Your work might be nice, but it won’t stand out. It will not show the uniqueness, because you don’t dare to show who you are. So to express yourself in your full range of colors you must reach a point where you take that risk of stepping out of the shadows, but remember to take that shadow with you. That which you thought was your ugly side, that which you thought was too vulnable to be seen. That is what will create your full light. So turn up the light and let it shine in all the corners, and don’t be ashamed of who you are.

As I say all the time, the same goes with your artwork. Don’t be ashamed of showing your rawness, your mistakes, your not getting it togheter as you planned. No one is perfect, maybe a lot of people like to pretend that everything is always bright and positive in their life. But we are all humans, and we have all the duality of light and darkness inside of us.

So to be bold, is not the same as to be just bright and positive. It’s to have the honesty to also express and be aware of your shadow. To own yourself fully. To not hide parts of yourself. Then you can truly shine in your holeness and your unique beauty of who you are.

Marie J.Engelsvold. My creative process.

Marie J.Engelsvold. My creative process.

Here are some tips for you, to really step out of the shadow.

Ask yourself:

1) What are my boldest dream? Be aware of what you really want to do if their was no limits.

2) What can I do today to take one step in that direction.

3) How can i express more fully who I really are? In all area of my life?

4) How can I be more honest about how I feel?

Do this exercise:

1)Take a piece of normal seized paper, and just start. Start sitting at a desk.

2) After a while, when you feel their are not enough space on your paper, cut the main part of the drawing out, and place it on a bigger seize paper.

3) Hang it on the wall, and keep working while standing up.

4) Now cut this drawing/collage out once more, and put it on an ever bigger seize paper, and lay it on the floor.

5) Now you continue working while laying on the floor.

Marie J.Engelsvold. “Green portal” 42 x 59 cm. Acrylics, paper cuts, textile, pencil and foam on paper. 2019.

Now reflect on how it felt to work in the different positions, and the different seizes of paper. was it provoking for you to go up in seize. To express yourself in a bigger way. How about the different positions, what did it do to the way you felt?? How did it affect your art work?

To go up in seize, allow you to use and come into awareness of your whole body, and to express yourself more fully.

Hope this helped you. I wish you a very nice day, a day where you allow yourself to shine, letting your light out ther

How to start your drawing praxis.

Do you want to start drawing, to find your own unique expression. I want to give you some free material on how to overcome the starting blocks. I hope you can use it, and that you get started or continue your creative work, letting your whole self shine through.

Because this drawing praxis you are embarking on, it’s not just about making some pretty artworks. It’s about you expressing you. It’s about you being honest, and being raw. As a side effect you will certainly find your own very unique signature. Because nobody is exactly like you, and thats your strength. But to come into that kind of honesty, that kind of deep lisentning to yourself, you have to unlearn what other people have told you about you, and about your creativity. So you have to start fresh. You have to start from a zero point.

Marie J.Engelsvold. Some of my drawings.

Marie J.Engelsvold. Some of my drawings.

Here is what you get.

How to get around starting blocks.

The importance of committing yourself to the process. To make space for your creativity and yourself.

A list of which materials you need.

The creative process.

Be present. Be heart and body centered.

Be aware of how you judge and criticize yourself.

Things you can do, to go from being blocked to be in the flow.

Exercises

Meditation.

What to do when you are stucked in the creative process??

Do you sometimes feel stuck in your creative process?? In this video I will give you some practical tips on how you can work through this feeling of being unable to progress.

1) How working on several pieces of work can release the expectations.

2) How we need to learn to let go, in order to create.

3) Why do we meet fear in the process?

4) How to recognize your inner critic, and start a dialog.

1) How working on several pieces of work can release the expectations.

In this video, I will show my own creative process working on 4 pieces, and shifting between them.

So make a little experiment. Take 4 pieces of paper. Start as normally. When you are stock in your process, put the piece you are working on aside, and start with a fresh new paper. Now you continue on the new paper until you feel stock again. You do this at least 4 times.

As soon as you feel a little resist full, a little nervous on how to continue, you change paper.

Now you got 4 works in progress. Can you feel it? It feels freeing to not have so much pressure and expectations of the one artwork. Now go back to the first one, and continue with that, for as long time as you are inspired. Then shift again. It doesn’t have to be in order, you just continue on one of the drawings you feel most compelled to work on.

You can do this every time you feel stock in a process.

The next thing I will talk about is

My four pieces of work, which I worked on simultaneously.

My four pieces of work, which I worked on simultaneously.

2) How we need to let go, in order to create.

We have to let go of something to hold space for new things to come in. But this is one of the most difficult things. To let go or actually destroy part of our work, which we might like but doesn’t fit. Or which is very nice, but it doesn’t ressonate, it doesn’t feel right.

Sometimes this niceness is more of a barrier than the ugliness. Most of us have a tendency to making it too nice. But when we hide ourselves behind this nice work, we are not real. Many times this feeling of stockiness comes because your work is so nice, that you don’t dare to destroy it….you don’t dare to put another line on that work in case you will destroy it all. It’s this kind of feeling that it’s okay, everything is there, but it’s a little boring. But it’s when you are showing all sides of you, not hiding whats raw and what you don’t understand, that your work gets unique and real. So just do it, let it go, don’t be afraid to change your work, to make mistakes. Experiment, play, make it funny. Use the exercise I just showed you, to work more quickly and to release this anxiousness. This resistance, which is nothing but fear.

3) Why do we meet fear in the process?

Fear is a factor we meet all the time. Especially when we are expressing ourselves through art.

What you are creating is a reflection of you. You express yourself through your work. Why are we artists and creators always so vulnable around our work?? Because we are sharing from the depth of our souls. Because we have to go deep, to get to the exciting stuff. If you only express the nice things, the work will get boring. Because art is a really good channel to release some of the things inside of you, which are very difficult to put into words. In the creative process we are connecting with our deep wounds and our shadow side.

Thats why it sometimes can be so provoking to use a certain color, or material because it is triggering something inside of you.

Maybee some part of you don’t like pink, or think it’s not a proper color for your work. But another part of you, feel this urge to use this color. You know it takes much more energy to say no I am not allowed to use pink, I can’t stand that color. Do it eventhough you are afraid. I know it sounds kind of stupid, to be afraid of using a color. But I think all artists and creators know what I’am talking about. It’s only you who sets the limits of what is possible. It’s you who are putting yourself in a box, and it’s only you who can open the lid.

But sometimes everything is easier when things are “black and white”, we set up some rules for ourselves, and then we think we are safe and “know” what we are doing. But suddenly it seems impossible to do anything else. Because now we have boxed ourselves into a category, and we have put on this nice label. It’s like we sometimes feel more safe to tend to a certain believe system or organisation and we adopt everything they stand for. It can feel very safe at first, because now everything is in the right order. Now we have someone or something outside of us, to tell us what is right and what is wrong. But in reality we are actually afraid of chaos, we are afraid of the dualities in ourselves, the diversity. The things we don’t want to face in ourselves? The many shades and facets of our selves.

Marie J.Engelsvold. “no fear” 29,7 x 21 cm. Acrylic marker, pencil and paper cuts on paper. 2019

The same goes for our art. Don’t be afraid to show all the shades inside of you. I have a funny example from my own process. Sometimes I go for a long time and want to use a certain technic, a new material or a color. But I can’t do it eventhough I want to, I feel this resistant in my body. For as long as I have been working with art, I didn’t use purple.I just didn’t like it. But last year suddenly I just was ready for purple, and it just poured out of me. It’s a very strong color, I see that, and it has a history of both being very royal, a color for the elite for the aristocrats for the church. But on the other hand it’s also associated with being some kind of a hippie, very laid back and all about new age and being very alternative. So the color is not for the weak, you have to say something with purple. Thats just my own interpretation.

But this resistant is nothing but fear, fear of showing a certain part of yourself, fear that nobody will recognize your “style” anymore. But you can’t run from yourself. You can change style as you like it, but you can’t change that you did it. I have changed my expression so many times, and sometimes I think nobody will think I did this. But very often people who knows your art can recognizing your signature. And you think you made an enormous shift when you shifted from using a acrylic marker to a brush with paint. For most of us it’s hard to change, and when we change something we think everybody will notice. So just do it, it’s not dangerous and it’s still you who did it.

Experiment. “The garbage bin”

1) Try to let the things you are afraid of out. Afterwards it’s easier. Do it on another paper. Take a paper and let everything out on that. Use it as a kind of garbage bin. Every time you are afraid of doing something on the piece you are working on, do it on the “bin paper” It’s actually freeing, and sometimes the bin works turns out really powerfull

4) How to recognize your inner critic.

It’s interesting to dig a little deeper into our own fear pattern. We can call it the inner critic. When you have more clarity on what triggers you, it’s so much easier to look that fear in the eyes, and work through it. When you let the fear out on the paper, or in other creations it will not be so mean.

Have a notebook at your side, while you are creating. Write down every time you hear that inner critic whisper something in your ear. What does the fear say to you? It’s a really good idea to talk with the inner critic in words, because it tends to be mental. Many times the inner critic comes from our parents and our teachers from school, all the thing we have learned about right and wrong and good and bad. Eventually it turns inward, and we think it is our own thoughts. Another funny thing is if we believe in what the inner critic has to say, we tend to meet persons in the outer world who reflects these things about us, back to us. But most of all it hold us back, and the inner critic is not you.

Here are some examples from my experience:

1) You don’t master that technic.

2) It’s not good enough.

3) It’s not interesting enough.

4) It’s a waste of time

5) No one needs your art

6) You didn’t attend the right art school

7) You are not a real artist

8) You are a failure

9) People don’t like your art.

Now try to give an answer to that fear, to that critic voice inside of you.

1) No, maybe I don’t do it the “right” way after some official rules. But I do it my way, I’am a creator and everyway I decide on is the right way. Do you get nervous when I don’t follow other peoples rules?? You don’t have to be afraid, I know what I’am doing.

(If you feel that the critic voice are right, because sometimes we might be benefitting in taking a course in a certain technic, because it will help us to express ourself in a better way. Of course don’t hesitate on learning something new. Just be aware that you don’t do it out of fear, but out of a feeling of expansion, and curiosity and positivity.)

2) Well, it is actually good enough for me. I accept this artwork, it’s just perfect the way it is. I felt so much joy and excitement doing this. I discovered so much in this process. If you don’t find it good enough, it’s okay with me, I don’t have to please other people with my art.

3) Okay. And what is interesting?? Something you read in a book?? Do I have to write 2 pieces of paper abothis artwork?? I think it’s interesting because I have put myself into it. I think actually I’am interesting enough.

4) This is the best way I know to waste my time. Totally absorbed in my work. Using all of me to create in the moment.

Is it because you are afraid I don’t earn enough money on it?? You know what, I’am making space in my life for what is most important for me. I’am not waiting to live my life until I go on pension. I don’t have a boring daytime job, dreaming about making art. I do it now. This is my life.

5) Well, I have many good examples of people who has been very positive around my work, that they actually felt the same playfulness and joy as I felt while creating it. They can feel the vulnerability and the sadness too. I have had many good and deep talks with people about my work. Also the fact that how it is to live like an artist, to do what you feel compelled to do. To show up with yourself and your work in all it’s aspects. I think we need art as a reminder of all the things that are not material or practical, but is essential. We need to feel interconnected and share feelings to feel alive. Thats important.

6) No, I didn’t study at an art academy. I went to Graphic design school. But I knew all along I wanted to make art, but I didn’t dare to go to that art school. But now years later, I can see that it’s easier to remain free when you have not learned all the right codes in the art world. Because you don’t become an artist just because you go to the right school. You become an artist because you do art as a praxis.Because you are committed. For me to make art is most of all about unlearning, to get to the core of whats me. To free myself of all the right ways. Because I’am good enough.

Can you see what I’am talking about. Get to know your fear. Discuss a little. Have a dialog. So next time you hear that fearful whisper, stop it. Don’t allow it to sabotage you.

Hope you could use this information. Have a very nice day, in a way so it’s not only nice, but a day where you can feel free to be you.

I’am sharing this information to you freely, from my own experiences. Hope you can use it in your own process. Any donation, is deeply appreciated. :-))

How do you work with composition?

Hi, how are you doing??

Today I want to talk about how you can work with composition. Are you contious about composition when creating? I normally talk a lot about the process, how to  create from your heart. How to stay in deep contact to  your feelings, and how you can express it in your artwork. I write about the topic in many different ways, in hope you will get what I'am talking about. But sometimes you have to step back, and do some mindwork. To analyse what you are doing, and how you can progress, and raise above obstacles. When you are more confident in being in the flow of your heart, you can start trying to analyse your work, without going into being overly critical and judgemental about your drawings.

Imagine you have done some drawings, but you are not quite satisfied. Take a look at the composition of your drawings.

  1. How do you arrange the elements on the paper? Do you always work in the center of the paper? Do you fill out all the white space?? Or do you only use the lower part of the paper?

  2. How about the size of the elements of your drawing? are they all the same size?? Are they all very small or very huge??

  3. What about the contrast between light and dark? Look at your drawing and find the darkest element and the lightest element. Are there a big contrast between the two values? Or are the tones or values of the colours nearly the same?

Their are a lot more things to look at, but theese 3 are the most important ones.

Marie J.Engelsvold. “Connection between different parts of myself” Acrylic tusch on paper. 42 x 29,7 cm. 2014

Marie J.Engelsvold. “Connection between different parts of myself” Acrylic tusch on paper. 42 x 29,7 cm. 2014

Marie J.Engelsvold. "Relationship with outlets for magic" Acrylic tusch on paper. 21 x 29,7 cm. 2014

Marie J.Engelsvold. “Try to transform ”Acrylic tusch on paper. 21 x 29,7 cm. 2014

Now take one of your drawings, and use the same elements but arrange them differently on the paper. Maybe using another size can help you.( I very often change to a bigger size of paper when I'am stuck.) Change the size of some of the elements to make more contrast. Also make one of the elements very dark, and another one very light.

How did it work?? Sometimes we just get some habits and we do the same things all the time.

By thinking about theese things you just push your limits of what is possible. In the beginning you have to work contious with being aware of how you compose your drawing. But after doing it many times you will do it quite intuitively, and you have another tool in your toolbelt.

Maybe I have just opened the pandoras box for you? Because when you start to change how you look at your artwork, when you have new ideas on how to do it differently, a lot more ideas and possibilities will arise. So just keep going, it's so much fun:-))

Make a kickstart.

Happy new year!!

I always like to start the new year, reflecting on how satisfied I'am with my life. What I like to change, and how I can do it. This year I came to one single thought. I just want to be me. I want to keep things simple, not starting up new projects without checking in on how I feel about it. I want to have time to go all in on what I really appreciate. And what I really appreciate, is to create. But as you know, creating takes time. You need to spend time, to really commit to your creative process. Since you are reading this, I assume you also want to express yourself. Creating from a true authentic place.

"Make a kickstart" Blog; Drawings from within

So why not start the new year by really committing to your creativity? What about making a kickstart?

If you really want to commit to your creative process, you have to set aside some time in your schedule. I will recommend you to start the new year with a dayly routine.

1 drawing pr. day, for 1 month. Use 30 minutes or better 1 hour pr. day. Do this to make a kick start.

You will see that it really makes a difference. You will end the month with a pile of drawings. I guess you will  be quite hooked on these creative moments, where you can  connect with your self. Try to make it fun, let go of the result. If you have a very busy calendar, make it down to 20 minutes. You can ask me "But why forcing myself to draw everyday, even when I'am totally stressed and just don't feel like being creative?" I say "just try to make room for this activity for 20 -60 minutes pr. day, and see what happens". Just make small doodles on a little paper in the train, or even in front of the television. But commit to do it everyday, and make a new and rewarding habit for yourself.

Small drawings. My kickstart. :-)

Go bigger.

We all have a tendency to do the same, we get habits. You might have this standard size paper, and just automatically use this same size. Especially in the beginning, we normally start in smaller scales. But you get a whole new drawing experience, going up in scale. You can't hide your drawing, when it suddenly sits on a larger paper. So why not be proud!

It's okay to start by copying a smaller drawing, just scaling it up. In that way you get an idea of the workprocess, without feeling totally lost on a huge white paper.

You might want to change your tools. If you are using acrylic markers, you can change the size to bigger ones. Or if you have an area with the same color,  you can try to make that same form in cardboard, to create another texture. But if you are using a blue pencil as your only tool, and you just love it, why not stick to that? You might experience that it takes a lot more time on the bigger scale paper, but it's a great way to relax and go deeper into the process.

I also startet out on normal size paper like 11,8 x 8,3 inches/ 29,7 x 21 cm. I still like it because it is handy and I can easily experiment with different possibilities. But sometimes I just love to do it in bigger scale.

A few years back, I made some decorations on a fence in Copenhagen. I wanted to draw, but of course I couldn't use paper and acrylic markers, so I had to do it another way.

IMG_3509.PNG

I used big wood panels, and som outdoor paint instead of markers. It was a huge experience, you have to use your whole body when creating on the big panels, and the drawings makes a totally other impact in that scale. The drawing (underneath) "relationsship as closed system with some outlets for magic"  is the size of 1,22 x 3,66 meters. I still call it a drawing even though it's made with paint. See more photos of the project here.

This drawing underneeth, was my starting point.

Buy a roll of paper, in that way you can experiment with a lot of different sizes. I like this paper; FABRIANO ACCADEMIA ROLL 200 GSM 1.5 X 10 M. Put it up on the wall, to give a better overview. I always prefer to have the paper in a upright position when working on a big size paper.

I hope you will try it, it's really fun:-)

What is your drawings all about?

It can be challenging to make sense of an intuitive drawing, because it is made in connection with your feelings and inner space.
(see my blogpost, let your feelings be your guide).

I like to sit for a while when a drawing is done, looking at the drawing. I just look, and at the same time feeling my body, feeling sensations, emotions. Very often I only have to wait a couple of minutes before some words begin to pop up. I write them down. And immediately I start to formulate a title. For me it's important to do this mindwork right after the drawing is done, while I'am still in the process. The drawing is a visual of my inner state, right at that moment. If I put on a title days or weeks after, it tend to be not so accurate.

When you have done around 10-20 drawings with titles, you can look at all the titles, and see if you can formulate a little text on base of that. In that way you will slowly get a pattern, of what you are working around. Every time you have a pile of drawings. Could be every month if you make a drawing a day, and it's not unrealistic. (You can be quite depended on your daily drawing time.:-) Try to formulate a little text. It's very rewarding to explain your drawings in words, actually that process can also generate new ideas.

In the beginning, my drawings didn't have a title. I wanted the viewer to make their own interpretations. But one day I had a talk with another artist about the issue, and I suddenly realized that my work was totally unapproachable to the viewer.

I actually had a lot of thoughts about what I tried to express. Immediately I started to write about my process. I guess I was ashamed of discussing my work, because it was so personal. All my drawings is about feelings and thoughts that I rarely speak of, and are barely aware of. Complex mixtures of all kinds of contradictory sensations that is hard to explain in words.

And I realized that I didn't have to write a novel, but just to give a few words to help the viewer, and myself sharing my inner world. Sometimes I even incorporate the title into the drawing, like I have done in this drawing.

I hope to inspire you to create in an authentic way,  getting in contact with feelings which might have been buried inside, letting it out on paper to have it released and integrated...and at the same time making some fantastic and unique artworks.

Wait!! Before you throw that drawing in the bin!!!!!

You have been drawing for hours, but the drawing doesn't feel right. You are quite frustrated, but before you just scream, and curl the paper togehter, throwing it in the garbage bin, wait a minute:-) Take a deep breath, maybe a cup of coffee, stretch your legs, jump a little, talk with somebody.

After this little break, return to your drawing, and have another look. Take a deep breath again. Now ask yourself what you like about your drawing, and what you don't like. How could you change it now, when it's almost done? Is it only a small correction or do you need to do some serious redesigning? If you can't come up with anything now, take a look at my list. "Before you throw your drawing in the bin"

Marie J.Engelsvold. "Balancing" 42 x 84 cm. 2015

This drawing. "Balancing", is an exampel of how I had made a drawing that just didn't resonated with me, and made it into something completely new. The diamond shape in the middle was the failed drawing, I placed it on a quite huge paper, and it progressed in a way that was completely unexpected.

Before you throw your drawing in the bin:

  • Take another element and place it, so it will cover the area you don't like. You can use a white acrylic marker or a white piece of paper. If you want color, use a colored piece of paper, or a colored acrylic marker. Of course you can use whatever tool you like, as long as it cover up the problem area.

  • Cut out the element/elements you like, and place it on another paper. If you need more space, choose a bigger paper. You can now use it as it is, or you can continue to work with this new setup.

  • If you only use pencil or pen, spice it up by using another tool. You can use watercolor, acrylic markers, chalk, or goauche. Try out different tools, turn your failed drawing into an experiment. It can be much easier to expand your limits and try something new on a piece of paper that's not completely blank. And the experiment might turn into something unexpected and interesting. (If you use gouache, or watercolor it's important that your paper is thick quality paper at least  220 gram.)

  • If you just can't make it work, take some white gouache or white acrylic marker, and make a thin layer which cover it all up. Now you have a new surface, where you can still have a glimpse of the old drawing. On top of that you can create something new, while keeping the history of the process, which gives a nice layer effect. (If you use gouache, or watercolor it's important that your paper is thick quality paper at least 220 gram.)

  • Another radical solution is to cut it all up in pieces. use them as mosaic elements on another drawing, or place them in a box with pieces of paper, you never know when you will need it.

Find inspiration everywhere.

Are you sitting in front of a blanc piece of paper, feeling totally uninspired? Take a look at your surroundings.

Sometimes I have a rare attraction to the way a jacket is hanging on a hook, or a lamp is hanging from the ceiling. I suddenly feel an urge to draw things that are hanging.

It could also be a stack of plates. I suddenly see stacked and piled things all around me. A pile of clothes, a pile of stones, pile of papers, a pile of cans in the supermarket. My drawings will be full of piles and stacked forms.

Be present and observant, when you are walking around in your neighborhood. We have a tendency to not look properly at the surroundings we are passing every day.  One day I notice a funny staircase, and suddenly it appears in my drawings. Or maybe I get inspired by a puddle. It makes me think of water in different forms. Water which comes out of the tap, a waterfall, or a flood, waves on the ocean or tears.

34.jpg

I can also be very inspired by other artists work, especially sculptures. Very often my drawings are inspired of  3-dimentional forms, that are connected in some way.

But I never copy orther artists work, I think it's not possible to copy anything when you work from within. Because all you care about is to make your own unique expression, which mirrors you. It would feel completely wrong to just plain copying other artists work.

But study the works that attracts you, and ask yourself why you are so attracted to that work? Is it the feeling it gives you? Is it the tecnic? The colors? The tools? The composition? Try to figure out what you like most about the artwork, and see if you can bring those elements into your  drawings, in your own way.

A social situation can also be a trigger for new ideas. It could be observing people at the dinning tabel, discussing politics. The fact that we all have our own perspective on the same situation, can mirror some conflicted parts inside my self. These inner conflicts can very well be a theme for my next drawings.

So If you lack inspiration, take a renewed look at your daily environment, and see what happens.

Experiment with shapes and lines.

If you take a look at a drawings elements, it basically consists of lines and shapes. Do you mostly use lines or shapes in your own drawings? Maybe a combination of the two? It's important to be aware of what elements you use. Shapes can create denseness in the drawings, and with lines you create movement and details.

Look at this article on "How to Be an Artist, According to Wassily Kandinsky"

"Kandinsky experimented with compositions populated by lines, simple geometric shapes, and the energized points where they met or overlapped. "

No matter how you normally draw, it can be very rewarding to go back to basic. Using very simpel elements. In this little exersice, you will only use abstract shapes and lines. Try to avoid recognizable elements, concentrate on the composition.

Materials: paper, glue, scissor, cardboard, colored paper, some tools you like to make lines.

  • Cut some shapes, from cardboard or colored paper. place them on a piece of paper. Play around, and when you like it, glue them on.

  • Now draw some lines on the same paper. Make a lot of these compositions, using only shapes and lines.

  • When you have 10 compositions. Choose one you like the most. Now use this one, as a starting point for 10 more compositions.

  • Think of how many ways you can variate the drawing. What happens if you take one of the shapes, making it much larger? Change one of the shapes from geometric to rounded? Making a lot of lines and only small shapes? Experiment with the possibilities, and see what happens. Eventhough your starting point was only a few shapes and lines, very soon you will learn how many ways you can go with theese elements.

In my pinterest collection I have a board called drawings I like. Take a look, and see how many different ways you can work with lines and shapes. If you like, take a look at some of my drawings here at my website. When I look at my own drawings,  I see a lot of shapes, lines and textures that I tend to use. Shapes and lines I feel more attracted to than others. It's like the letters in my  visual language. Are you aware of the shapes and lines you are using?

Want to find your own visual language ?

What is a visual language? You know, when you look at an artwork, and immidiately recognizing the artist? That is because it's an artwork, with a strong personal signature.

The visual language is the way you compose your artwork, the use of colors and shapes. How hard you press the pencil against the paper. Do you like a lot of details? or do you prefer big simpel shapes? All the elements in your drawings, are like the letters in an alphabet. When you have found your visual alphabet, there are endless possibilities on how to combine the elements, so don't think that you have to draw the same all the time. The way you combine the elements (letters in your visual alphabet) is the language. Actually one of the signs that you have found your own language, is that it allows you to dig deeper. Because your are narrowing down the spand of options, according to choice. And the deeper you go, the more you go into details, the more you will be open to the possibilities in the process. Another important thing to be aware of, if you want to attain your own unique signature, is to connect with your feelings. To create artwork which have a true voice. To create out of a need, to express something which is important to you. In my blog "Drawings from within," this will be my main focus. At the same time it will ressonate with all parts of you, and have a truly unique and authentic quality. You only find your visual language through praxis, create everyday or as often as possible, and you will slowly find your own unique expression.

Marie J.Engelsvold. “Transformation of system” Acrylic tusch and papercuts on paper. 29,7 x 21 cm. 2015

How to start?

1: Find your tools. Which kind of tools do you like??

  • I prefer acrylic markers (molotow) as my main tool, but like to combine them with more or less anything else:-), pencils, papercuts, watercoulour, textiles, yarn.....When I talk about drawings, I’am very broad in my definition, it could be anything on paper, actually.

  • Get your hands on a lot of different tools, and try them out. Or look at drawings you like, which tools are used? Maybee you want to combine different kinds of tools.? Like pencil togheter with crayons, or watercolor in combination with chalks?? Goache, color pencils and pen?? Or maybee just a pen in red??

  • As a start I will suggest you draw on relatively thick paper, like 220 gram. In that way you can keep on working, whitout everything falls into pieces.

Find a space

What I love most about drawing is how easy it is to find the time and space.

First of all you don’t need a big space, a studio or a lot of free time. You can begin to draw eventhough you have a full time job. In the beginning you can use a sketchbook, of quality paper.

  • The best option is to find a time in the day or evening, where you can be alone, somewhere with a table and a good workchair. If that’s not possible – you can use your transport time plugging some relaxing music in your ears to create a private space.

  • Another option is to go out in nature, a park, by the sea, your garden …or another outdoor place you like, and where you can sit by your self.

Use at least ½ an hour, 1 hour is better….or if possible longer spand of time. It’s not nice to have to look at your watch all the time, which gives a lot of tension and stress.

Spend some time to relax before you start, feel your body, take a deep breeth. And just think about having a joyful relaxing time for yourself. Look at this as a kind of meditation, where you are creating at the same time.

Try to find some time for drawing every day, it will make you more committed, and you will amaze yourself with your own progress, making it evenmore worthfull and fulfilling.

So why not start today?:-)
