Anything can happen when the artist group POUBELLE takes over Augustiana and launches a wild and experimental art project. Poubelle means “trash can” in French, but also contains the French word “belle” (beautiful).
POUBELLE was founded in 2022 by Mirjam Berloth and Lisbeth Parisius, and the 15 participating artists come from the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. POUBELLE is critical of modern society’s overconsumption and throwaway culture, and therefore works with the artistic possibilities found in waste and locally collected materials.
From trash to new narratives
The art project begins with the collection of leftover materials found on and around Augustiana. While the artists are at Augustiana, they create new artworks from these materials. Their artistic process is about experimentation, playful exploration, and simple abstraction. The goal is to give materials new life by placing them in new contexts. In other words, POUBELLE uses materials that others have discarded to create new and surprising narratives. Another aim is for the artists to produce an exhibition in the White Mansion at Augustiana during the process.
The artists’ studios are open during Augustiana’s opening hours, allowing visitors to follow the process and talk with the artists about the development and themes of the works. Everyone is also welcome when POUBELLE hosts workshops, guided tours, and performances at Augustiana on Saturday, September 21 and Saturday, September 28 from 2–3 PM.
