Galerie Pi. Borgergade 15D, 1300 Copenhagen.

Invitation to the opening Friday, March 29 at. 17-19

The exhibition lasts until Saturday, May 4, 2019

Now that spring is on its way and the joy of expectation slowly opens the mind to new plans, paths and opportunities, it is obvious to show this playful and experimental exhibition.

Marie J. Engelsvold and Morten Gersager Abel's works are something very special together because they are sensuous and fun loving while at the same time thematizing the bottomless complexity that comes with being human today. The ways they do this are very different, and the tools cover the extremely concrete to the sensuous, complex and undefinable. The question, "what is it?" Goes like again on several levels, and starts thinking about how we create meaning - you might say life's meaning - of what we see and experience. People often find it easier to relate to things that are either / or, just as we love to classify concepts in dichotomies. At this exhibition, we need to look more closely at the "authentic" and the "constructed".

Morten Gersager Abel

Postbilag.jpeg

Morten Gersager Abel's funny trompe d’eul versions of everyday objects, such as boxes, furniture and utensils, which in our consciousness have a high symbolic value of practical authenticity, are things that resemble, but are not. Through the notion of the solid, tangible natural material as an authentic element of our everyday life, he refers to others and more variegated levels in modern human life. He explains: "Modern technology is just as much the truth as it reflects it, and it can be difficult to navigate in. The sculptures can be seen as an attempt to create order in chaos by symbolizing credibility, reliability, and authenticity. They point back to man as the creator of their own living conditions - homo faber - and the basic, unpretentious materialism that reconstructs some basic values of a post-structural, changeable world.

Marie J. Engelsvold works differently with the abstract, transparent expression, where compound materials with textures and surfaces that are glued or sewn together create what one is tempted to call "small ecosystems" in the complex and complex reality. The point of her works is precisely to express what is too complex to express in words, and it is quickly perceived that the circular energy that lives in her works must be felt - not understood - and it is here that the theme of authenticity arises. . Her eccentric, almost electric, works are reminiscent of the fact that the authentic life is full of spontaneous and unexpected elements that make it dynamic and changeable. She wants to show the importance of the inner world, the energy behind the materialistic world. As everything we meet in the outer world is a reflection of our own perception. As she herself says, "I want to free myself from the mental expectations and images, to be truly present with myself."

Naked heart.

I’am going to exhibit in San Francisco, and I’am very pleased. The opening is this saturday the 13. october. So be sure to show up, if you are in the area.

Naked heart.

Large scale sculptures are hanging in the room, drawings big and small on the walls. The works are trying to capture my own Vulnerability and nakedness in the acceptance of being who I’am. Sometimes it’s scary to open up to all the aspects of yourself, which are not all pretty.

The sculptures are very fragile constructions, made of different materials such as wood, yarn, textiles and foam. The materials are combined, so they make new constructions and constellations, where all the materials play their part to the whole. The elements of the sculptures can be viewed as different part of my being, that I try to bring togheter in a new balance or symmetry. Almost all the works in the exhibition is symmetric, as a mirror of the duality of all.

"I don't mind the gap"

My perceptions is in the way. I'm stumbling over the moment.I want my work to be those moments.

The focal point of my work with the sculptures is the composition of incompatible materials. I am inspired by the contrasts and sensibilities of the meeting between the different materials. Heaviness and lightness. Soft and hard. Matt and glossy.

I'm constantly incorporating new materials, and it's in the process of not mastering and knowing the materials, that something magical can occur. The work of getting the different materials to fit together, is very visible, giving the sculptures a fragile and awkward expression. It is by making mistakes and be open for the unplanned, that the works will come alive.

The feeling or radiance of the work is the most important. I don't have a fixed idea about how the artwork will look like, I seek the expression in the process. I'm playing around with various expressions. I build and rebuild. What I do not understand with my head, but is full of life makes me happy.

The drawings also revolve around the sculpture, and various elements that are put together. I play with the contrast between the flatness and 3-dimensional shapes, that blur the eyes. The drawing process, and working with the sculptures inspire each othe.Sometimes a drawing is the starting point for a sculpture, or I'm working on a sculpture in my drawings.

We have been in our studio at the Film Station for one year and we love this place. Here is good space and atmosphere and inspiring surroundings. After 10 years of negotiation, the Film Station has now bought the Old Værløse Flightstation area and is now well on its way to making it into a creative area.

Eventhough we are located 30 minutes by car from Copenhagen, I find it so nice to come out to a more quiet area. Here you can see the sky and the fields and your mind and spirit can fly.

Find your way: "The Flying Studio" The Film Station (Old Værløse Airport) Bringevej 151, building 154, 2760 Måløv. Denmark

If you use the GPS, it's very important that you write: BRINGEVEJ 151 - 2760 Måløv, and not Værløse.

Color workshop at our studio.

This weekend we had a color and composition workshop at our studio, we call the studio "The flying studio", because it is located at an old flight station.

We made a lot of experiments with composition colors, contrasts, color value, warm and cold contrasts and much more. A lot of fun, and deep concentration.

Read more about our workshops.

I have also a blog called "Drawings from within". Here I share my experience about the drawing process.

Opening of "A Fabled Object" in Australia.

Some photos from the opening of A Fabled Object, at the Byron School of Art Project Space. Unfortunately my artworks was broken in transit. But considering the meaning of the sculptures, the fact that they all broke to pieces, was kind of a deepening of the theme. We choose to do some rework of the sculptures, rearranging them in a new way.  Helle Jørgensen, who is teacher at the Byron Art School, did a wonderful work, crocheted little cotton socks on the yellow part of the sculpture "Heart to heart", and rearranged the sculptures in a new way, bringing them into a new context.

My sculpture "Heart to heart" that was broken in the transport to Australia.

A sneak peak into my studio:-)

til blog.jpg

Here I'am working with some concrete sculptures.

Concrete ia a very exciting material- It's much easier than ceramics, and you don't need an oven. I love to experiment, and see what is possible. !!

When I'am working in the studio, time is flying, it's like being in another world, a holy space where I can connect with my inner space, and be free.

Sculpture experiment

So excited about making sculptures in concrete. Now it has to dry, and then I will see what I will do with it next. It's all an intuitive process.
