Marie J. Engelsvold’s artistic practice encompasses sculpture, installation, video, photography, drawing, and mixed media.

Engelsvold works in an exploratory manner with the potential of materials and investigates different methods to open up the unexpected and the unknown. In her sculptural works, she seeks new combinations of contrasting materials, where incompatible elements meet and create a sensory experience that transcends the boundaries of logic.

The sculptures are often constructed from parts that establish fields of tension between soft and hard materials—for example, textiles, foam rubber, and knit set against wood, ceramics, concrete, and plaster. This material friction helps to evoke a distinctive poetic and bodily grounded aesthetic.

Engelsvold has a studio in the artist community at Filmstationen in Værløse and is based in Copenhagen.
